Too posh to pea

So, as you will all know, ducks are Omnivores and there is a long held belief that they will try and eat pretty much anything they can get in their beaks. Peas are a recommended supplement to their diet and are a good source of protein, fibre, vitamins, iron and calcium.

Earlier in their development after starting them on sweetcorn we added in peas, they were not impressed. No problem, we leave it a while and try again in the hope that tastes change.

Last weekend was the time, they had had a shower and were eagerly awaiting their tea. The look of utter disappointment and disgust on their faces as they picked up a pea and immediately spat it out again was akin to a teenager being asked to clean their room.

At this point a small tussle broke out as they attempted to grab as much of the calciworms and pellets for themselves as possible as nobody wanted the peas.

Even Podgy Pidge turned his beak up at the peas ( what happened to beggars cannot be choosers ) as they were all still on and around the tray when I arrived to give them breakfast on Sunday morning.

59 days old and, if all goes to plan, they will soon be leaving us for pastures new. Wee Dot has all but caught up now and it is almost impossible to tell which one she is, so she has every chance of a long and happy life.

I am often asked how we know that it is Daphne that returns each year and while I say it is impossible to say for sure I always point out various reasons, including the hidden location and the level of trust that she shows in us from the moment her babies hatch.

This week, another reason became evident when I picked up a net to remove some vegetation from the pond and Daphne immediately ran around the quad telling them all to run and hide as they scattered in all directions, not the reaction we get if we head towards the stairs with the net to catch a bird that has got in to a classroom. Assessing a potential threat from the direction I travel with the net would very much indicate previous visits.
